Painting Kaius Konorius with the NEW Warhammer Tone Pro Paints

Kaius Konorius is ready for battle, and in this tutorial we take you through the complete painting process for this incredible Ultramarines character model, while putting the new Warhammer Tone Pro paints to work.

From building up the iconic blue armour using the new Tone Pro range to tackling the intricate gold trim, reds, whites, metallics and power sword, we take the model from its first coat of primer through to the finished base and final details.

In this video you’ll see:

  • The new Warhammer Tone Pro paints put to work
  • Building rich Ultramarines blue with shadows, midtones and highlights
  • Painting and weathering the intricate gold trim
  • Adding depth and highlights to the reds and leather details
  • Painting the white helmet crest and purity seals
  • Metallic weapons and a glowing power sword effect
  • Building depth and texture across the finished base
  • The completed Kaius Konorius reveal

Dan uses the new Tone Pro paints throughout the project, including the Gorgshroom Blue range to build the armour from deep shadows through to crisp highlights, giving us a great chance to see how the new paints perform on a full character model.

So here is the complete step-by-step painting guide for the Kaius Konorius Ultramarines character model, based on the video!

Phase 1: Priming & Blue Armour

  • Prime & Zenithal Highlight:
    • Apply a black base prime, then spray a zenithal highlight using Warhammer Tone Pro White (sprayed at 25 PSI, thinned 50/50 with airbrush medium).
  • Shadows:
    • Spray Gorgshroom Blue (Tone Pro #1 - Dark) from underneath to create deep shadows.
  • Armour Midtone:
    • Spray Gorgshroom Blue (Tone Pro #3 - Middle) from the top down as the main armour colour.
  • Armour Highlights:
    • Use Gorgshroom Blue (Tone Pro #1 - Light) as a thin, transparent coat for edge highlighting.
    • Optional: Add a touch of pure white to the light blue tone to push crisp edge highlights further.
  • Self-Leveling Check:
    • Apply Blackstone Void #1 (AK Black) straight from the pot to test self-levelling on recessed areas.

Phase 2: Gold Trim & Details

  • Base Coat:
    • Base coat all the armor trim and gold details with Retributor Armour for fantastic coverage.
  • Highlight / Weathering:
    • Follow up with Liberator Gold to edge-highlight and over-brush, creating a slightly worn, weathered metallic look.

Phase 3: Reds & Leathers

  • Leather Base:
    • Mix Mournfang Brown with a touch of Red to give the leather/strap areas a vibrant red-brown tint. Apply straight Mournfang Brown to the sword scabbard.
  • Shading & Wash:
    • Create a custom black wash using Blackstone Void #1 (Black) mixed 30/70 with Shading Medium. Apply this over the red sections, gold trim, and as a pin wash on the armour.
  • Red Highlights:
    • Edge-highlight the red sections using Bloodtooth Red (Tone Pro #3 - Midtone).

Phase 4: Whites & Purity Seals

  • Base Coat:
    • Mix Blackstone Void #1 (White) with Rakarth Flesh for an off-white base tone, providing smooth and exceptional coverage.
  • Shading:
    • Apply Soulblight Grey (Contrast Wash) into the recesses of the white areas to add depth.
  • Highlights:
    • Clean up and highlight the white areas (such as the helmet crest and purity seals) using Blackstone Void #1 (AK White).

Phase 5: Weapons & Blades

  • Silvers:
    • Base coat the metal weapons and silver details with Leadbelcher.
    • Edge highlight and over-brush the blade edges using Stormhost Silver.
  • Power Sword Energy Effect:
    • Mix Gorgshroom Blue (Tone Pro #1 - Light) with Shading Medium and apply it near the base/center of the sword as a glaze/contrast to give it an energy glow.

Phase 6: Base

  • Base Coat:
    • Paint the rocks and ground texture using Blackstone Void #3 (Grey) thickly in one coat.
  • Washing:
    • Apply a rich black wash (Blackstone Void #1 mixed with Shading Medium) to give the grey a satin finish and heavy depth, or use a mix of Mournfang Brown and black for a muddy earth look.
  • Drybrushing:
    • Finish with a light drybrush of Blackstone Void #3 (Grey) followed by Blackstone Void #1 (White) to pick out raised edges on the rocks, skulls, and debris. Outline the rim of the base with Blackstone
