Merlin’s Miniatures has joined forces with PaintByBlunders for an extraordinary collaboration that’s sure to capture the imagination of Warhammer enthusiasts everywhere. Together, we’re taking on a project steeped in nostalgia and challenge: restoring and showcasing the legendary 1999 Forge World resin Baneblade kit. This colossal tank is a legendary symbol of Imperial power, forever tied to a defining moment in Warhammer history. In fact, it holds the distinction of being the very first Baneblade Forge World ever produced for hobbyists.
In Part 1 of this four-part series, we crack open the box to reveal the Baneblade in all its vintage resin glory. Previously painted in a bold 90s Ultramarines scheme, it looked fantastic but isn’t quite the direction we’re taking with this project. We’re preparing it for an epic diorama display that will show off its incredible character and sculpted details. With a kit this old and revered, the process of basing and sticking all those guns on, requires care, but no heavy cleaning was needed.
We start by airbrushing the entire model in black primer, laying down a solid base. To bring out those beautifully 90s details on camera, we’ve also airbrushed white ink lightly over edges and raised areas, a technique that will help in later stages of painting. While not much progress has been made yet beyond the priming, the groundwork is set for what’s to come in Part 2.
This Baneblade isn’t just hefty in lore, weighing in at a staggering 316 tons and requiring a crew of ten. In real life the resin model itself weighs almost 1kg, a testament to the solid craftsmanship of Forge World’s early days. Bristling with 11 guns and packed with sculpted details that scream 90s charm, this model has so much personality, making it the perfect centrepiece for the ambitious display we’re planning.
But this isn’t just about us, it’s about the community too. We’re inviting you to help shape this Baneblade’s future. Should it charge into battle in classic Cadian green, stand resolute in Death Korps of Krieg grey, or break tradition with a completely custom scheme? Your opinion matters, and we’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
This series promises not only to celebrate the craftsmanship of this iconic kit but also to share tips, techniques, and behind-the-scenes insights that will inspire both veteran hobbyists and newcomers alike. Packed with nostalgia and brimming with hobby wisdom, Project Baneblade gives you a front-row seat to a build like no other.
